Verifiable Computation: How to Securely and Correctly Execute Code on the Cloud

This question has been studied for decades by theoretical computer scientists and cryptographers under the name verifiable computation. While much of this research is infeasible for realistic applications, recent breakthroughs in verifiable computation has made this technology feasible for some real-world applications. In this talk, we present a survey of the field of verifiable computation before focusing on practical protocols for common cloud computing tasks, including training neural networks, MapReduce jobs, and simple database queries. We evaluate existing protocols across different contexts (mobile devices, personal computers, enterprise software) and conclude with a look at cutting edge research and what will soon become practical
